This qualification is designed to introduce you to the skills required as a teacher in the education and training sector.
Your current job role may include an element of training; or you may be interested in finding out more about the work of a teacher or trainer and the skills which are required to carry out that role effectively.
The Level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF) is a nationally recognised introductory teaching qualification designed to prepare you for teaching or training in a wide range of contexts: further education colleges, independent training providers, local authorities and voluntary organisations.
The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers in the further education and skills sector and will give you an insight into:
- the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
- inclusive teaching and learning approaches
- assessment of learners
- facilitating learning and development for individuals
- facilitating learning and development in groups
- understanding the principles and practices of assessment.
In addition to the theoretical content the course will feature a strong element of practical sessions where you will gain experience of teaching though microteaching activities. microteaching is an activity where trainee teachers prepare and deliver a short teaching and learning session to their peers and then evaluate their practice. this aspect of the programme is particularly valued by learners as it develops their confidence in delivering teaching and learning in a supportive peer environment.
You do not need to be working in a teaching role to take this course. You should, however, normally have a minimum of a Level 3 qualification or considerable experience in the subject you intend to teach and ideally hold a Level 2 qualification in literacy and numeracy (further guidance and information on college courses available in literacy and numeracy can be provided on enquiry). No access to teaching hours is required for the Level 3 Award in Education and Training.
The course is likely to take place on a Thursday evening, from 5–8pm, over a 12-week period. Your classroom-based learning will be supplemented by access to a range of online resources available for you to use in your own time on any Internet-enabled device.
You will be introduced to, and learn through, a range of teaching and learning strategies, including whole class, group and paired activities, as well as lectures, presentations, independent study and workshops. Your teaching skills will be mostly assessed via your microteaching session towards the end of the course.
You may progress to the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training programme.
