The Foundation Diploma in Performing Arts is co-taught with The Kings Theatre in Southsea. Unique to us, this course enables you to develop your performance skills in musical theatre, working on the professional stage at The Kings and the studio theatre at the Sixth Form Campus. You will gain inside knowledge and understanding of how the performing arts industry works, how the backstage and technical elements contribute and get one to one support with auditions and your next steps with the support of industry professionals.
There are two units of study taught over the two years. For the first two terms, you will work on developing your singing, acting and dance/movement skills, through a series of mini projects. For example, you could do a jukebox musical, create a short play on the subject of healthy eating aimed at primary school students or a section of dance for the Dance Live competition and you will work on a range of scripted materials to gain confidence in different styles of acting.
Unit A: Developing Performance Skills – you will explore different performance styles in detail, and be assessed on how well you apply and understand your singing, acting and dance skills in the context of three key performances. You will also be assessed on how you explain the theory behind your decisions through working notebooks.
Unit B: the Performing Arts Industry – you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the opportunities available to you in the performing arts Industry. You will explore routes into a career into the industry and prepare audition material that enables you to access higher education courses and, potentially, industry auditions.
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including drama or dance, or a merit in Level 2 Performing Arts. Significant extra-curricular performance experience will also be accepted.
You will have a 9.55am start, one lesson in the morning, one in the afternoon and a guaranteed 4pm finish. You will also have at least one morning and one afternoon per week free for private study.
100% internal assessment (with external verification). You will be assessed over a range of internal units to showcase both your practical and written skills.
You could progress to studying Performing Arts at a higher level, at university or at a dance/drama school. There are also many opportunities within the arts industry, for example in stage-management, lightning technician etc.
